The “Y” cuts a slice of sky and draws the sun into the heart of the house.
— Steven Holl Architects

Located amidst the luscious greenery of the Catskill Mountains, the unique forked shape of the Y House makes an organic mark on a distinctive site with expansive views. The structure is one of world-renowned architect Steven Holl’s few, and revolutionary, residential designs.

The geometry of the Y House exists in reverse of public and private, with bedrooms below and common living space above. Bedrooms are intimate, while the living area and kitchen are expansive and open in design. The inner sanctum of the home has a vast hanging space for an art collection framed by windows with views of the Catskills. The exterior is composed of a steel roof and frame and high-quality cedar siding stained a bright iron-oxide red. The two balconies finishing each arm of the home act as passive solar-devices by maximizing winter sun and protecting interiors from excessive summer rays.

Included on the thirty-three acres are a swimmable pond and a boathouse designed by Austrian architect Peter Liaunig.  On the walls are a series of geometric abstraction frescoes by acclaimed painter David Novros chosen to embrace the color palette of the natural surroundings.

Time magazine declared Holl as America's best architect for his buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye. The Y House is a perfect representation of Holl’s genius creating classic 21st-century luminist design, borrowing from 19th-century luminist painters to blend space and light.

The Y House is located three hours away from New York City, and only an hour from Albany and Hudson, a beloved cultural destination of the Hudson Valley.

The bold, iron-oxide red exterior stands apart from the verdant 33.4-acred land it sits on. “The Y House was designed in a watercolor sketch while standing on the hilltop site," says Holl. "It splits off in the two view directions, with sleeping above living on one side and the reverse on the other side.”

Located in a lonely mountain setting less than an hour's drive from Albany, New York, the firetruck-red Y House is an alluring example of Steven Holl’s residential work. Public and private spaces alternate throughout the layered interior, which is split across two arms that branch off from the main entrance.

Constructed in 1999, the house takes full advantage of its surroundings. From the interior, irregularly shaped windows frame the landscape in unexpected ways, while communal spaces benefit from larger, floor-to-ceiling glass. The 33-acre site also has a minimalist, glass-walled boathouse perched at the edge of a serene pond.

Set on a hilltop in New York’s Catskill Mountains lies an iron-oxide red house built in the shape of the letter Y.

The steel and timber-clad Catskills home was built in 1999 to a design by Steven Holl and features two arms, which branch off from a central space and end with glazed walls and balconies.
